چکیده

Abstract. This paper discusses the opportunities and challenges of integrating science technology studies (STS), especially variant based on actor–network theory (ANT), into fields human geography with a critical research tradition. Drawing experiences political ecology empirical carbon markets, it uses example reducing emissions from deforestation forest degradation (REDD+) to show how turn towards such STS impacts has changed “framing” REDD+: analysing REDD+ as an “neoliberalization nature” focus users detailed accounts infrastructures practices making markets. Discussing consequences these observations different proposals brought forward combine ANT ecology, argues for conscious reflective use ANT-inspired approaches benefit additional insights this approach allows while keeping potential alive.

Aligning ecology and markets in the forest carbon cycle

© The Ecological Society of America www.frontiersinecology.org T atmosphere is, by its very nature, a global commons (Hardin 1968) and addressing rising atmospheric greenhouse-gas (GHG) concentrations requires international cooperation among the major carbon (C)-emitting countries. One mechanism that has been widely considered for mitigating climate change is the “offset”, whereby removal of ca...

Monitoring and estimating tropical forest carbon stocks: making REDD a reality

Reducing carbon emissions from deforestation and degradation in developing countries is of central importance in efforts to combat climate change. Key scientific challenges must be addressed to prevent any policy roadblocks. Foremost among the challenges is quantifying nations’ carbon emissions from deforestation and forest degradation, which requires information on forest clearing and carbon s...

Scenarios in tropical forest degradation: carbon stock trajectories for REDD+

BACKGROUND Human-caused disturbance to tropical rainforests-such as logging and fire-causes substantial losses of carbon stocks. This is a critical issue to be addressed in the context of policy discussions to implement REDD+. This work reviews current scientific knowledge about the temporal dynamics of degradation-induced carbon emissions to describe common patterns of emissions from logging a...
